Anatomy Curricular Project: Plastinated Organ Systems  For ten years, Kirkwood has used a human cadaver and a full set of health and diseased human organs to aid in the instruction of human anatomy and physiology students. This project will enhance the anatomy and physiology courses with the use of plastinated organ systems. They will provide unique experiences for pre-professional health care majors as they prepare for prevention and care of pathologies. Nursing students, physical therapy assistants, pre-medicine, pre-pharmacy, pre-dental, and pre-athletic training students will be able to take advantage of these facilities which will provide invaluable experiences for future student and employment. The project will expand the existing outreach program to high school students for recruitment into health science professions.

Exercise Physiology Laboratory  The purpose of this program is to enhance the human physiology component of the curriculum by equipping an Exercise Physiology Lab. Specifically, the project will: 1) Provide inquiry laboratory activities to develop critical thinking skills; 2) Allow nursing majors to manipulate physiological processes as they related to maintaining health and decreasing the risk of developing disease; 3) Develop new laboratory experiences that will allow students to conduct research and develop a deeper understanding of science related to their chosen professions; 4) Recruit high school students into a Summer Health Science Bridge Program that will provide opportunities to engage in scientific research and recruit students to enter STEM majors.

Biotechnology Program  The goal of this project is to increase the Biotechnology options available for students attending Kirkwood Community College. Five options will be available to students: 1) The Associate of Science (A.S.) degree in Biotechnology would be for students who plan to transfer to a four-year institution to continue their studies and work towards a Bachelor's degree; 2) The Associate of Science (A.S.) degree in Bioinformatics would be for students who plan to transfer to a four-year institution to continue their studies and work toward a Bachelor's degree; 3) The Applied Associate of Science (A.A.S.) degree in Biotechnology would be a terminal two-year degree that would enable students to have skills necessary to work in a biotechnology laboratory; 4) A Certificate in Biotechnology would be available for students who currently hold a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree in basic science but needs "hands on" experience in basic biotechnology techniques to increase their chances of employment; 5) A Diploma in Biotechnology would be available for students who currently hold a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree NOT in a scientific discipline. The diploma program would include core science courses as well as biotechnology techniques courses.
