| Improving Elementary Science by Connecting Science Inquiry and Language Arts |
This partnership project seeks to improve student performance in both science and language arts on standardized tests by linking science inquiry activities to the reading/writing programs within elementary schools by using the Science Writing Heuristic, which attempts to replicate authentic science activities by scaffolding students' critical thinking and problem solving strategies. Instead of the traditional laboratory format, the Science Writing Heuristic asks students to write statements about their research questions followed by the process of making claims and framing evidence from their investigations. A key component in this process is dialogue where students are asked to comparing their findings.
