| Demonstration of Chick Embryo Development |
To demonstrate formation of the vertebrate animal body,
pre-incubated chicken eggs are transported to Hoover along
with dissecting microscopes and other equipment. The
director and two UNI students explain and demonstrate to
groups of 4-6 students how to open an egg and remove the
embryo. The students are assisted as they remove embryos and
put them into a dish on a microscope stage. The embryos are
cultured overnight and viewed again. One 'scope is connected
to a video camera with monitor so that all can see
successful, interesting embryos. Some eggs remain unopened
to develop to hatching.
