Competition Days
Iowa Central Community College's Career and Technical Programs host a Competition Day on the Iowa Central Campus every year in the spring. In each program, area students participating in a dual credit class take a written test prior to competition day. This test is created and graded by an Iowa Central instructor and they work with the high school instructors to determine the contestants. During competition day, students compete in related areas in hands-on activities. Competition day is a way to assure that the students in the high school dual credit classes are learning the appropriate materials in an applied atmosphere.

DIVA Tech
DIVA Tech is designed to encourage females to pursue fields
in math, science, and technology career paths. This program
targets middle school girls in 6th, 7th, and 8th grade. They
spend 3 days on campus and complete a variety of activities,
such as building solar cars, building picnic tables, making
bio-diesel, and learning about electricity all in a hands on
lab atmosphere. The focus is to get the girls exposed and
interested in technical fields and to get a sense of
confidence and a realization that they are capable of
pursuing a career in these fields where they would be
considered a non-traditional employee.

Intro to Biotech/Biofuels
This science initiative was set into motion to meet the needs of area employers in the provision of biofuels and biotechnology education. Working together with high schools and providing training and equipment for advancing student interests and skills, the course "Intro to Biofuels/Biotechnology" was developed. Schools interested in pursuing the training and offering the course were given equipment designed to follow the labs and topics discussed in the workshop that they attended.

Project Lead The Way
In an effort to bring Project Lead The Way (PLTW) to rural Iowa, Iowa Central Community College plans to aggressively pursue schools in Area V to participate in the middle school Gateway to the Future and high school PLTW programs. The implementation of PLTW programs as college credit courses to be offered at area schools will prepare students to be successful in postsecondary engineering and related engineering technology programs.

Staff Development
Iowa Central offers a variety of staff development opportunities to high school instructors usually during the summer typically for credit. The target is high school instructors that may teach in that curriculum area for dual credit, but are also open to anyone wanting to learn the course content. These classes are usually for three consecutive days for around six hours a day. Our college instructors set up and teach these courses. We have offered courses in technical areas from automotive, welding, machining, and electrical, computer aided design, web design, and graphics design. This initiative helps in developing an interest in a particular area, builds relationships between the college instructors and the high school instructors and helps to maintain continuity between courses in the high school and the college.
