| Seed of Science/Roots of Reading |
Seeds of Science/Roots of Reading is an NSF-funded
instructional materials development project. The program is
a collaborative effort between science and literacy
educators at the Lawrence Hall of Science (LHS) and Graduate
School of Education (GSE) at the University of California,
Berkeley. Reading about Science units provide systematic
literacy instruction using a set of thematically related
science books. The Reading About Science program addresses
the need for information-rich literacy instruction that
builds comprehension, fluency, and academic vocabulary while
introducing students to important science concepts and
understandings. My eighteen second grade students are field
testing the unit Reading About Soil Habitats.
